What is a Labor Affirmation Anyway?

An affirmation is “the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed” or “emotional support or encouragement.” It is a declaration, statement, assertion, and proclamation. I love these synonyms because they are all great strong words.

Labor affirmations are empowering statements or words of encouragement to help women during their labor experience.

There is a significant amount of fear surrounding labor. Over the past few decades, labor has become dramatized, and the focus has shifted onto the pain of delivering a child. Televised dramatizations of labor show screaming women, rushing to the hospital, life-threatening complications and women begging “give me the drugs!”

The reality is that there doesn’t need to be this much fear around labor. It’s a natural process that women have been doing since the beginning of humanity. When complications do arise, most women have access to medical care that ensures a positive outcome.

Let’s reject fear, embrace our womanly power, fill ourselves with confidence and declare “I can do this!”.

Below are some printable labor affirmations I have created. You can download a zip file of these images here.

Baby Knows

My body knows what to do, just as my baby knows how to be born.

Just keep breathing slow and even. Inhale calm. Exhale tension.

I am a strong and capable woman. I trust my instincts to know what I need for my labor.

Each wave brings me closer to meeting my baby.

My courage is stronger than my fear.

My baby will be born healthy and at the perfect time.

It always seems impossible until it is done.

The more relaxed I am, the more I can open up.

My job is to simply relax and allow the birth to happen.

I trust that my body knows exactly what it’s doing.
